New Expressive Arts Therapy

Expressive Arts Therapy is a multimodal/intermodal approach that combines visual arts, movement, drama, music, writing and other creative processes to encourage personal growth and communal connection. Through attunement and rapport, your therapist will select appropriate modalities that fit your unique needs, strengths, and goals.

It is natural to flow from one form of expression to another, and your therapist will embrace this in your sessions. By combining the arts processes and flow, you will gain access to your inner resources for healing, clarity, and creativity. For example, if you are working on positive thinking, you may create visual positive statement cards and act them out, verbalize them aloud, or embody them in a way that is most meaningful to you. Engaging in multiple expressive arts modalities allows the mind-body connection to work together, creating an integrative process and experience.

We understand that people process things differently, and we work with all ages individually or in groups!

What Is Expressive Arts Therapy?

Expressive arts therapy is a creative and therapeutic process that uses movement, visual art, writing, sound, drama, and reflection to help clients explore emotions, experiences, and personal growth. It provides a safe, supportive space where individuals can express thoughts and feelings that may be difficult to put into words.

In expressive arts therapy, the focus is not on performance, artistic skill, or creating a “perfect” result. Instead, the creative process becomes a tool for self-expression, insight, and healing. Through different forms of creative expression, clients can better understand emotions, patterns, and personal experiences.

Expressive arts therapy can help clients:

  • Express emotions in a safe and creative way

  • Reduce stress, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm

  • Process difficult experiences, grief, or trauma

  • Strengthen self-awareness and emotional insight

  • Improve confidence, coping skills, and self-esteem

  • Explore identity, personal meaning, and inner strengths

The focus is not on the final creative product, but on the process of expressing, reflecting, and discovering new ways to understand the self.

What Does An Expressive Arts Therapy Session Look Like?

Each expressive arts therapy session is tailored to the client’s needs, goals, and comfort level. Sessions are supportive, creative, and grounded in providing a safe space where clients can explore emotions, experiences, and inner thoughts through different forms of expression.

A session may include:

  • Using art, movement, writing, sound, drama, or other creative tools

  • Exploring thoughts, emotions, and experiences through creative expression

  • Reflecting on images, words, movement, themes, or patterns that emerge

  • Identifying emotional responses and building self-awareness

  • Developing coping skills, regulation tools, and personal insight

  • Connecting the creative process to daily life, healing, and growth

Sessions may feel calming, expressive, playful, or reflective depending on the client’s needs that day. Clients are always invited—never pressured—to engage at their own pace. Safety, curiosity, and emotional support remain central to the therapeutic process.
